Two Mouths to Feed

She had two mouths to feed, which had become her purpose in life.  Everything she did in every waking moment was for the care and safety of these two mouths.   There was little food to be found these days. But today, she got lucky.  Today she had found leaves that had been stacked and pressed behind some large rocks on the cliff where they lived.  She and her son ate their fill of the leaves, and the baby nursed.
Everything felt calm after their feast.  For now, they wanted for nothing. With long steady licks she cleaned the dirt and excess milk from the baby’s face. Her older child sensed a swirling up above and had begun circling around and around beside her.  She paused in this moment and noted the lack of need, the lack of fear, the lack of stress, and sighed a long and deep sigh.
