My Blog

When I hurt my back in 2009 I scaled back my work and did not make anything that I could not carry.  My back has been better for some time but still I have continued to work on a smaller scale because I do not like to ask for help.  When I made "Dog" which was made for the "Guys and Dogs" Show at ACME Galleries, I stumbled upon a system, not new of course but new to me, where I can make an object in many parts and then assemble the whole thing  after it is fired.  With wooded arms and legs to reduce the weight.  I had the opportunity to see Janis Mars work at Kent State one afternoon when I was in school at the University of Akron.  Her sculptures are one solid hollow body of clay 2-3 feet high.  The neat thing was the feet were always very disproportionately large.  This size gave stability to the piece.  I began working on a family to go with "Dog" yesterday with really big feet and gnarly toes.  The head that is on "Dog" is a face that I have drawn my entire life.  It was on all my folders in high school and my best guess as to its origin would be looking at the National Geographic behind the chair at my Grandmother's house.  ( I would hide behind the chair because I did not want anyone to know I was looking at the topless natives you know.)
